Supporting the Whole Person – and Their Circle of Support

For individuals with autism and developmental or physical disabilities, wellness goes far beyond physical health. It includes emotional well-being, creative expression, and community connection. And just as important—their circle of support also needs support.

In this month’s issue of Autism Spectrum News, AABR CEO Libby Traynor explores the powerful impact of holistic wellness. At AABR, we’ve seen how an integrated approach can spark meaningful transformation. Our Move, Create, and Meditate Program—developed in response to the isolation and stress brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic—is built around three key pillars: movement, creativity, and mindfulness. Together, these elements help individuals build confidence, express emotions, and reconnect with their communities.

  • Movement through adaptive yoga and exercise supports physical health, emotional regulation, and sensory integration.
  • Creativity offers powerful outlets for nonverbal expression and personal empowerment.

Mindfulness practices like guided breathing and meditation reduce anxiety and improve focus.

These aren’t just activities—they’re life-changing tools that foster independence and joy.
Through a SAMHSA-funded initiative, AABR extended these principles into our residential homes, reaching individuals with autism, intellectual disabilities, and co-occurring conditions. With the support of Behavioral Intervention Specialists and trauma-informed training, we saw incredible progress—from increased community outings to greater social interaction and emotional resilience.

What began as a pandemic recovery effort has evolved into a broader campaign to expand access to wellness programming across our Day Habilitation centers. Especially for nonverbal individuals, these programs offer alternative pathways to connect and grow.

But none of this happens alone. Behind every individual is a circle of support—families, caregivers, professionals—who also need resources, encouragement, and space to recharge.

As we move forward, our mission is clear: to be a trusted partner in advancing physical and mental wellness for all abilities. Whether you’re a parent, provider, or advocate, we invite you to join us in creating inclusive, empowering communities.

Because when we move, create, and meditate—we all grow stronger
