History

A Legacy of Care Since 1956

Since its founding in 1956, AABR has been committed to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. What began as a small grassroots effort in Queens, New York, quickly grew into a trusted organization known for its compassion and dedication. Our early years were shaped by a strong desire to create inclusive, supportive environments where individuals could thrive.

In the 1960s and 1970s, AABR expanded its services, opening its first residential facilities and day programs to address the growing needs of individuals with disabilities. We worked closely with families and communities to provide the best possible care, education, and support.

By the 1980s and 1990s, AABR became a leader in advocacy and innovation, introducing programs that prioritized independence, community integration, and vocational training. We helped shape policies that continue to benefit individuals with developmental disabilities today.

In recent years, AABR has broadened its reach even further, with initiatives like the Program Without Walls (WoW), offering participants more opportunities for community engagement and personal growth. Thanks to continued partnerships and funding from both public and private entities, AABR now serves thousands of individuals through a wide range of services, including residential and community-based programs.

Today, with 21 group residences throughout the New York City area and two educational day programs for adults, we remain as dedicated as ever to our founding mission: to create a beloved community for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. As we look toward the future, we honor our past and continue to adapt, innovate, and expand to meet the ever-changing needs of the people we serve.

In 2024, AABR unveiled a refreshed brand identity, introducing a new interpretation of our acronym: All Abilities Beloved and Respected.

This transformation highlights our deepened commitment to inclusivity, respect, and the celebration of all individuals. At the heart of this brand evolution is our new logo, font, color palette, and icon, each carefully chosen to reflect our mission and core values.

Our logo, featuring a butterfly gracefully intertwined with the infinity symbol, represents a beloved and interconnected community, one that embraces diversity and the boundless potential within every person. The blue tones signify both autism awareness and a sense of calm and inclusion, central to our work.

The calligraphy-inspired font conveys the fluidity and beauty of our journey together, honoring the rich history of AABR while looking toward an evolving future that embraces growth, connection, and possibility.
