Team AABR Shines at the 2025 Special Olympics New York

Friday, May 31 was a day of pride and celebration as more than 25 AABR athletes competed in the 2025 Special Olympics New York. Their hard work, dedication, and spirit earned a collection of gold, silver, and bronze medals across a range of events—showcasing not just athletic talent, but heart, teamwork, and resilience.

The excitement was palpable from the very beginning. Staff and fellow residents packed the stands to cheer on our athletes as they competed in track and field, shot put, bowling, softball, and more. Whether sprinting across the finish line or aiming for a strike, our athletes gave it their all—and the results were inspiring.

At the center of this effort was AABR’s Assistant Director of Residences and longtime coach, Learie Carrington. A steadfast mentor and motivator, Coach Carrington has led our athletes with passion and purpose year after year. For 2025, he spent months training with individuals, organizing weekly practices, offering one-on-one guidance, and building confidence with every session. He also kept the entire AABR team engaged, sending regular updates that highlighted progress and inspired everyone in the organization.

Months of preparation paid off as the competition got underway. Every race run, every throw made, and every medal earned was met with thunderous applause. The pride in our athletes’ eyes—and the joy on the faces of their supporters—made the experience unforgettable.

What truly elevated the day was the powerful sense of unity. Residences showed up in full force to support their teams, and staff from across AABR volunteered their time to help make the day seamless and celebratory. The cheers came from all directions—including fellow competitors from other organizations—creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and shared pride.

We are incredibly proud of every AABR athlete who competed. Their strength, determination, and positive spirit represent the very best of who we are. We are equally grateful to Coach Carrington for his leadership and lasting impact on our athletes’ lives.

Thank you to all who made this day possible—staff, volunteers, families, and fans. Together, we created something truly special.

Here’s to our amazing athletes—you continue to inspire us all.
